Official Statement of the Christian Democratic People’s Party concerning the post-election developments in the Republic of Moldova
|
In the result of the parliamentary elections held in Moldova on the 5th April 2009, the following parties acceded into Parliament: - Communists Party of Moldova with 50% of votes; - Liberal Party - 12,8% votes; - Liberal Democratic Party – 12, 3% votes; - Alliance “Moldova Noastra” - 9,8% votes.
The international observation missions have declared the elections in Moldova as correct and legitimate. Even if there have been registered minor infringements, the elections generally fulfill the international standards. Immediately after preliminary announcement of the elections results, anticipating the decision of the Central Election Commission concerning the final elections results, without presenting any official appeals to the authorities, three political parties (Liberal Party lead by mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca; Liberal Democratic Party lead by Vladimir Filat and Alliance “Moldova Noastra” lead by former mayor of Chisinau Serafim Urechean) called people for public street demonstrations that degenerated into violence on the 7th April 2009. The participants at demonstrations, mainly young people, besieged the buildings of the Parliament and Presidency, destroyed the offices and gave fire to the buildings. One person died being asphyxiated by the smoke inside the burning building and over 100 people injured. The state symbols were profaned and archives of the Parliament and Presidency have been destroyed. In order to avoid human victims, the Government ordered police to abstain from any violence against the protesters.
In the context of these events the Christian Democratic People’s Party states the following:
1. The events happening in Moldova these days are backed by forces hostile to independence and European aspirations of Moldova. The street actions that take place in Moldova are inspired, financed and organized by the Russian secret services, according to a scenario prepared by the former head of the Moldovan Secret Services Valeriu Pasat, already in 2005. 4 years ago, immediately after the parliamentary elections that took place on the 6th March 2005, Valeriu Pasat, who is currently based in Moscow, tried to organize the same street actions, despite the fact that the international elections observation mission has declared the election process in 2005 as correct and legitimate. The Russian style “colored revolution” was avoided due to the position of the Christian Democratic People’s Party (PPCD). The leader of PPCD, Iurie Rosca, revealed this scenario in a press conference and declared that the PPCD would not participate or organize any public demonstrations aiming in fact a coup d’etat. The events happening in Moldova these days seems to be the Moldavian version of the “tulip revolution” in Kyrgyzstan. 2. Violent actions and acts of vandalism were coordinated from behind by the same political actors which were engaged in this coup d’etat scenario in 2005. Heads of so-called anticommunist and pro-European opposition who are lead on the ground by the former President of Moldova Petru Lucinschi, very close to the Russian imperial interests in the Republic of Moldova. 3. The hostile forces tried to organize a coup d’etat and eliminate physically the President of the country Vladimir Voronin. The Head of the State survived just thanks to quick evacuation from the presidential office just few moments before his office was invaded by hooligans and criminals, who were ready to assassinate him. 4. Unfortunately some important political forces and media institutions from Romania were attracted in this dirty game against the Republic of Moldova. By contrast with the European institutions, some important political actors and media institutions from Bucharest ignored the official position of the international community about the legitimacy of the elections in Moldova and declared openly an unconditional solidarity with violent protestors. This way our Romanian neighbors became involuntary victims of the Russian trap. In this tensioned situation the Moldovan authorities were constrained to react. We can appreciate the critical position of Moldovan leadership concerning the Romanian interference in the provocation of political crisis and violence as disproportionate, but in any case this partially exaggerated attitude towards Romania has its objective explanation. 5. The political target of this extreme and criminal scenario is to destabilize the political situation in the Republic of Moldova, to call new elections and to install an anti-European and pro-Russian leadership of the country. The most important element of this scenario is the intention of legalizing the Russian military presence in the Republic of Moldova. The hypocrite disapproval by Russian authorities of violent actions committed by extremist groups is part of this dirty game. 6. As the oldest democratic political party in Moldova, PPCD organized thousands of street demonstrations against the ruling parties. However our protests were always peaceful, democratic and based exclusively on our political will of promoting freedom and democracy in our country. PPCD cannot admit violence as method which can be used against the political opponents, even in case of some abuses which can be committed by authorities. 7. The PPCD does not participate in any street demonstrations and strongly condemns the undemocratic, violent and aggressive actions undertaken by the political parties that manipulated young people and provoked victims and massive damages and huge prejudice to the international image of the Republic of Moldova. 8. PPCD calls the international community to take actions in order to stabilize the political situation in Moldova and to help our country maintain its democratic and pro-European way of development.

The upcoming parliamentary elections of the 5th of April will play a crucial role of determining future foreign political vector of Moldova, as well as developing and reforming state institutions inside the country. Christian Democratic People's Party has shown its commitment and aspiration to have free and independent country by struggling for justice and human dignity throughout years. The party has proven its irreversible strivings to integration into the European Union. Therefore, the CDPP should be given a real support from the likeminded parties sharing the same ideals and the European institutions should not preserve their efforts to ensure transparent and fair elections in Moldova.

|
|
On parliamentary elections from the Republic of Moldova
The EPP closely follows political developments from the Republic of Moldova on the eve of the parliamentary elections which will take place on 5th April 2009. As a democracy in transition and as a country which has proposed the strategic objective the European integration, Moldova is to deepen its political and economic reforms, to adjust its laws and practices to the European standards. The separation of the totalitarian soviet past and the advancement to democracy must be strengthened by strong institutions of the rule of law and total respect for human rights. In the current electoral competition, the EPP as usually, supports its partners from the Republic of Moldova – the Christian Democratic People’s Party led by President Iurie Roşca. Our fraternal party is the oldest democratic institution in this country. Being at the forefront of the struggle for democracy and independence for over twenty years, this party affirmed itself as a vigorous political movement, formed of real fighters for freedom. The PPCD is the only political party in Moldova which was present in all five legislatures of the national Parliament from 1990 until now. Now is the historic moment for a considerable electoral victory and its accession to governing. The EPP expresses its conviction that the electoral process in Moldova will be fair and democratic one, according to international standards in the field, and the authorities will ensure all conditions for an honest and transparent political competition. The EPP declares its full solidarity with Christian Democratic People’s Party and wish them success in parliamentary elections. Our political family will be with the PPCD and after the elections of this year and will encourage the co-operation of the European institutions with the new Moldova’s authorities in order to support the efforts of this country to consolidate its economy and democratic institutions and to advance on a closer co-operation with the European Union.
